During ‘Wendy’, Malin asked that the song be broken down, and the band stripped out an extended bass/guitar/drum solo allowing Malin to address the audience and let them know they were in for a long night of music. During his stellar live rendition of “Bastards Of Young” (by the Replacements) he asked that the crowd sing along. There was a moment during the first few choruses that had me wondering if we’d be able to pull it off, but as the sound crested the half way mark, the Horseshoe was showing off it’s fair share of Westerberg fans during what was one of many magical moments during the show. For their second set of music, the band played ‘Happiness is Overrated’ and ‘Gasoline’ without the quartet, bringing them back out for the third of their set onwards. The third song of set two was a stellar rendition of William Garvey’s ‘Goodbye Horses’, a track made eerily famous in Silence Of The Lambs during the scene with Buffalo Bill dancing with his weiner tucked between his legs to creepy perfection. Utilizing a mixture of live drumming, integrated samples, programmed loops and three Lemur Input Devices, The Glitch Mob delivered one of the coolest live electronic performances I have seen in a while. Their Lemurs were aimed towards the audience so we could all watch the band serve up their material as the Lemur’s lit up their finger tips as they played. Since the Melvins have not come to Canada for a decade, their performance was a celebration of their disfigured creations over the last twenty-five years. The band opened with the opening tracks from their latest album “The Bride Screamed Murder” before jumping into fan favourites from albums like 1993’s “Houdini” and 2006’s “(A) Senile Animal”, among others. I keep a running list of about a dozen bands that really SHOULD be seen live, and Apocalyptica are definitely on this list. Watching three Finnish fellows shred on cello’s for 80 minutes is something every music fan should experience at least once. Most Green Day fans are well aware of the band’s superb stadium presence and command of their live performance.  But it’s possible that even the most schooled fan was unprepared for Green Day’s frenetic 3-hour long Toronto appearance last night, packed full of favourite tracks from the band’s catalogue of music and a myriad of other things to keep the crowd on their toes throughout the show.  What the California punkers might have lacked in structure, they more than made up for with fun-loving antics, pyro, and an unheard of amount of audience participation that made it one of the most interactive shows I’ve seen in a long time.
