Green Day – Molson Canadian Amphitheatre, Toronto – August 18th, 2010

Most Green Day fans are well aware of the band’s superb stadium presence and command of their live performance.  But it’s possible that even the most schooled fan was unprepared for Green Day’s frenetic 3-hour long Toronto appearance last night, packed full of favourite tracks from the band’s catalogue of music and a myriad of other things to keep the crowd on their toes throughout the show.  What the California punkers might have lacked in structure, they more than made up for with fun-loving antics, pyro, and an unheard of amount of audience participation that made it one of the most interactive shows I’ve seen in a long time. Anthony - Theses Pictures are amazing! I am the kid in the red shirt. and I was hoping there might be someway for you to send me those pictures of me on stage. Theres the two, me in the foreground, and me behind Billie. My email was already typed in, and if you could send those, that would be great, because the quality is amazing.

Thanks!

Peter Murphy – Lee’s Palace, Toronto – August 10th, 2010

Interspersed with his solo material, Murphy and his bandmates played numerous Bauhaus songs (of which ‘Stigmata Martyr’ was my favourite) throughout the ninety-minute set. The first song of the first encore was a wonderful cover of ‘Hurt’ by Nine Inch Nails, performed by just Murphy and his guitarist in a wonderfully quiet fashion. This was followed by ‘Too Much 21st Century’ a recent Bauhaus track from the Go Away White  album that was put together when the band re-formed briefly a few years ago. I thought ‘Cuts You Up’ and ‘Deep Ocean Vast Sea’ were going to close off Murphy’s performance, but a steady assault of cheers and applause from the crowd pulled the band out for a second encore.

Boris w Russian Circles – Lee’s Palace August 9th, 2010

As a remixed version of ‘H.M.A. – Heavy Metal Addict’ played over the speakers before Boris came on stage, I was filled with a mixture of emotions. I was totally stoked that Boris were minutes away from taking the stage, but I have to admit to being a little bummed that a recorded version of ‘H.M.A.’ meant the likelihood of the band playing the ACTUAL song live was slim (H.M.A. is one of my favourite songs from the triple vinyl 45′s Boris release last year under the title of Japanese Heavy Rocks Volumes I, II and III). The band DID play live versions of ‘8’ and ’16:47:52’ from Japanese Heavy Rocks, so I ultimately left the venue a happy camper in that respect.

Juliette Lewis – Lee’s Palace, Toronto – August 7th, 2010

This evening’s performance marked my third time seeing Lewis live. I saw her for the first time in Lee’s Palace in 2005, supporting the You’re Speaking My Language album (her second release with The Licks). At that show, I went in as someone curious to see ‘the Hollywood starlet on stage’. I left Lee’s that night with the album in my hand, and a new understanding of Lewis and her commitment to rock and roll. This isn’t something she’s doing to pass the time. Lewis isn’t making a Bruno album like Bruce Willis, or levying a train-wreck of pseudo-rock like Joaquin Phoenix… No, Lewis is fully immersed in her craft.
